Literally forever ago, there was God; and he was happy. One God, the only God. No one ever thought to ask him where he came from, but he answered anyways. He said, "I am that I am." He caused himself. Literally forever ago. And he was happy. One God, the only God, but he was not alone forever ago. He stretches beyond what any person is capable of imagining or being to expand himself into three persons without becoming any more than one God. And God loved himself. Without a hint of selfishness, God loved himself. God loved himself because he was good. No one ever loved a milkshake because the milkshake was self-important. No one ever loved a sunset because the sunset was proud. God was the best thing there ever was. And he was bigger than you or me. And he was all there was. And he loved himself. And this made him happy.
The way God loved himself was different from the way I've ever loved anything, because everything I've ever loved ran out. God, in his happiness and in his love, spilled himself over into time and space. And there was the world. Where there was nothing, behold, there was something. Where did this come from? A full and happy God, with plenty of riches to share. God created rocks and water, but there was no life. God created plants and animals, but none bore his image. God created man, but man was alone. God created woman, and now, "Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh!" Man had something to be happy with.
The way God loved man was different from the way I've ever loved anything, because everything I've ever loved served me. God's love for man flowed from his love for himself as a never-ending river. A reservoir would not do. A reservoir would fill up, and the love of God would never stop flowing. Literally forever ago, there was God; and he was happy to love a black hole. God is big enough to fill black holes and make them give. He makes the black holes give, but not to him. He is already overflowing. God is big enough to fill back holes and make them spill out more of him to other black holes. No infinity can contain him.
And so it was, and so it will be. Literally forever from now, God will be spilling over happiness into emptiness, which will spill over again into another emptiness. God is happy. God loves himself. God loves you. And that is enough.
